The Goldberg Variations

2026 / Feature film / In production
A young man created over a hundred online personas from his bedroom in Florida. He was simultaneously a white supremacist, a radical Islamist, a feminist blogger, a GamerGate troll. The FBI arrested him in 2015.

Joshua is the first inhabitant of latent space.

About the film

Joshua Ryne Goldberg lived his entire adolescence online. From a single bedroom in Orange Park, Florida, he built a constellation of fictional identities so convincing they mobilized real people, real institutions, real violence.

He was an Australian white supremacist named Michael Slay. He was Tanya Cohen, a progressive activist. He was Australi Witness, an ISIS sympathizer. He had over a hundred personas, each one inhabiting its own corner of the internet.

In September 2015, the FBI arrested him. He was 20 years old. He had never left his parents' house.

The Goldberg Variations is a hybrid feature film that investigates not only who Joshua was, but what his story reveals about the nature of identity in the age of synthetic media.

Method

Post-documentary
mise en scene

The film uses the same tools that Joshua used to fabricate his identities: generative AI, synthetic media, the latent space itself.

When a model is fed with Joshua's traces and generates a face that is none of his personas and all of them at once, that image is not a lie. It is a document of multiplicity.

The mise en scene of this film is the mise en scene of the maybe: what could be true, what was performed as truth, what the machine dreams when fed with the traces of a person who was already, in life, a generative model.

Network topology — the web of identities

Villa Albertine 2026

Research takes place in Florida, where Joshua lived, and across the digital territories he inhabited.

AI as collaborator

Artificial intelligence is not used as a tool for efficiency. It is a collaborator that displaces the creative gesture.

Liquid writing

Research, writing, shooting, and editing happen simultaneously. The process mirrors Joshua's own fluidity between identities.
