Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis

Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis (b. 1988) is a French filmmaker and contemporary artist. His work operates at the intersection of cinema, contemporary art, and digital art. He has developed a singular post-documentary practice in which artificial intelligence holds a central position: simultaneously as subject of investigation, artistic method, and creative collaborator.

His films and installations investigate contemporary image regimes: virtual worlds, surveillance, digital memory, algorithmic forensics. Post-documentary, as he practices it, does not seek to document reality in a conventional manner but to reveal its hidden layers.

AI enters his process according to a precise philosophy: not as a tool for augmentation or optimization, but as a collaborator that alters. This position, resolutely anti-fetishist on the technological front, distinguishes his work from the wave of artworks that instrumentalize AI as spectacle or gadget.

His methodology, which he calls liquid writing, proceeds through flux, through permeability between the stages of research, writing, shooting, and editing. The boundaries between these phases dissolve: writing continues in the edit, research contaminates the mise en scene, algorithmic accident becomes filmic material.

"I think the virtual no longer exists. The latent space is a documentary territory as much as the street."
